Apple Published Every Spec of the iPhone Duo's Cameras Except One

Apple's technical specifications page for the iPhone Duo runs to several thousand words. It gives the aperture of every lens, the frame rate of every video mode and the recycled titanium content of the 3D-printed hinge cover, but it does not say how many megapixels sit behind the folding screen. On a page built to answer questions, that single omission is the most informative line in it.

The one number missing from a very long page

Apple describes the inner camera as an "under-display FaceTime camera" with an ƒ/1.8 aperture, Center Stage, and 1080p video at 30 or 60 frames per second. Every other sensor carries a figure: 12 megapixels above the 5.4-inch outer display, 48 megapixels each for the Fusion Main and Fusion Ultra Wide on the back. The camera beneath the 7.6-inch inner panel is the only one Apple declines to quantify. MacRumors noted the gap on 10 September. For anyone who followed the months of leaks before the launch, this is the first official page to measure them against.

Apple is not normally reticent about resolution. Megapixel counts have been marketing material for more than a decade, and part of the 9 September presentation was spent on the 48-megapixel sensors. A flattering number reaches the keynote; an unflattering one reaches the footnotes. A number that appears nowhere invites the inference Apple has left room for.

What the video ceiling gives away

The specification sheet still answers the question indirectly. A sensor that records 1080p has to resolve at least 1920 × 1080 pixels, or roughly 2.1 million, so two megapixels is the floor. A sensor that cannot record 4K is unlikely to be much above eight, because 3840 × 2160 works out at 8.3 million pixels and phone cameras normally downsample from a larger array rather than upscale from a smaller one. The outer front camera, at 12 megapixels, records 4K at up to 60 fps. The inner one stops at 1080p60. The honest range is therefore between two and eight megapixels, and the silence argues for the lower end.

The ƒ/1.8 aperture supports that reading: it is faster than the ƒ/2.2 of the outer camera, as expected from a lens that has to recover the light absorbed by a layer of pixels in front of it. Apple has not published the transmission loss, and it will only become measurable when reviewers get devices.

The feature list is the bigger tell

Set the two front-camera entries side by side and the missing number stops being the interesting part. The outer camera lists Retina Flash, Photographic Styles 3, Night mode, next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting with six effects, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5, the Photonic Engine, burst mode, Cinematic mode, Dual Capture and slow motion. The inner camera lists none of them.

What it does list is short: Center Stage for video calls, tap to zoom and rotate, ultra-stabilised video, lens correction, auto image stabilisation, wide colour capture, Animoji and Memoji in FaceTime, and QuickTake at 1080p. Read as a whole, this is not a camera Apple has under-described. It is a camera Apple has scoped to exactly one job, a video call on the large screen, and has not asked to do photography. The computational pipeline that makes modern iPhone selfies look the way they do is simply not wired to it.

Touch ID, not Face ID

There is a second absence on the page, and it explains the first. The Duo's sensor list includes a Touch ID fingerprint reader built into the side button. Face ID is not mentioned anywhere.

That choice is what makes an under-display camera feasible. Face ID does not depend on a camera alone; it needs an infrared projector and receiver operating as a unit, and firing a structured light pattern through a layer of light-emitting pixels, then reading it back accurately enough to authorise a bank transfer, is a far harder problem than passing a FaceTime image the other way. By moving authentication to the frame, Apple only had to solve the easier half. Owners of every Face ID iPhone since 2017 will be relearning how they unlock a phone.

The dot Apple almost admits

The camera is also not quite invisible. The area of screen above it appears to lack the nano-texture finish Apple applies to the rest of the inner display, and probably sits over a lower-density patch of pixels. The result is a small glossy circle that catches the light at certain angles. Apple's own marketing renders include a faint circular shadow in that spot, which is a quieter way of saying the same thing.

Samsung has been here already: it shipped under-display cameras on foldables including the Galaxy Z Fold6, then reverted to a conventional 10-megapixel punch-hole on the Z Fold7. Apple's supply chain has worked the problem for years. A December 2023 report described LG Innotek developing a freeform optic lens array meant to cut distortion and compensate for lost brightness. Whether that array is the one inside the Duo has not been established.

What to check when it ships

Preorders open at 5:00 a.m. Pacific on Friday 16 October, with availability on Friday 23 October. Anyone weighing the Duo against a conventional iPhone should judge the inner camera on the job it was built for: open the device, start a FaceTime call, and watch it in a dim room. For photographs of yourself, the outer 5.4-inch display and its 12-megapixel camera remain the better tool, and Duo Preview exists so a rear-camera shot can be framed on that screen.

Apple shipped a first-generation answer to a problem the industry has not solved, and kept the weakest figure off the page. That is a defensible engineering trade. It is also a reminder that on a spec sheet listing the recycled content of a hinge cover, the blanks are deliberate.
