Apple never prints milliamp-hours on a spec sheet. It talks about hours of video playback instead, and it has done so for years. The numbers for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are public anyway, because European law requires Apple to publish an energy label on its EU product pages, and that label carries a battery capacity in mAh.
What the label shows is a generational split. One of these two phones got a meaningful battery upgrade. The other barely moved.
The two numbers
For the models that still have a SIM tray, Apple's EU energy labels give the iPhone 18 Pro a 4,056 mAh battery, against 3,988 mAh in the iPhone 17 Pro, a gain of 68 mAh, or 1.7%. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is listed at 5,391 mAh, against 4,823 mAh last year: 568 mAh more, or 11.7%.
The gap between the two models is the part worth pausing on. Last year a buyer who moved from the Pro to the Pro Max bought 835 mAh of extra capacity. This year the same move buys 1,335 mAh. The distance between Apple's two flagship phones has widened by 500 mAh in a single generation, a 60% increase in the spread.
That is a product decision, not a coincidence of physics. A larger chassis creates room, but Apple has had a larger chassis on the Max side for a decade and has generally kept the two models moving in step. Widening the spread this sharply pushes buyers who care about endurance towards the more expensive phone.
Why a regulator is the source
It is worth being clear about where these figures come from, because it explains why they are reliable. Apple does not volunteer them. The European Union requires a standardised energy label on smartphones sold in the bloc, and the documentation behind it includes the rated battery capacity. Apple publishes the label because it must, and the number on it is a declared figure the company can be held to.
The practical effect is that European regulation has made an Apple hardware specification globally visible. Buyers in Ohio learn their phone's battery capacity from a label written for a shopper in Ireland.
The eSIM footnote that matters in Europe
Those capacities apply to the versions with a physical SIM tray. Apple sells eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models in a specific list of markets, namely Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and those units get a slightly larger battery, because the volume freed by removing the tray is given over to the cell. Apple has not confirmed those capacities.
France, the rest of the European Union and the United Kingdom are not on that list. Buyers there get the tray, and with it the published capacity rather than the larger one. It is a small difference, but it is the rare case where keeping a piece of legacy hardware costs battery life.
RAM stood still, and the price did not
Apple does not advertise iPhone memory either. MacRumors confirmed it through Xcode 27: both iPhone 18 Pro models carry 12GB of RAM. So did both iPhone 17 Pro models. The iPhone Air also has 12GB, while the standard iPhone 17 has 8GB. Since the iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the 18 Pro, MacRumors expects it to carry 12GB as well.
Flat memory is the most revealing line in the whole specification. On-device AI is the feature Apple has been building its software story around, and on-device AI is memory-hungry: a model has to be resident in RAM to answer instantly. A year in which Apple deepens that story without adding a gigabyte is a year in which something else set the constraint.
That something else is price. The industry-wide memory shortage has been pushing component costs up for months, and Apple has raised prices across several product lines because of it. In the United States the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, $100 more than their predecessors. Read the two facts together and the spec sheet says what the press release does not: memory got expensive enough that Apple paid more for the same amount.
What mAh does and does not tell you
A larger battery is not the same as longer battery life, and the 11.7% figure should not be read as 11.7% more hours. Endurance is the product of capacity, display efficiency, chip efficiency and how aggressively the software sleeps. A new process node can deliver more runtime from an identical cell, and a brighter display can consume the gain. Apple's own video-playback figures remain the comparison that reflects all four variables at once.
What the capacity numbers do reveal is intent. Apple spent its physical budget on the Max and held the Pro roughly where it was, then spent nothing extra on memory in a year when memory is the scarce part. Pre-orders opened on 12 September, with both phones arriving on 18 September. Anyone weighing the two models now has the arithmetic that Apple's own marketing leaves out.
