Almost Nothing Has Leaked About the Two Apple Watches Expected September 9
Series 12 and Ultra 4 are widely expected at Apple’s September event, but the useful facts are narrower than the rumors: a reported speed bump, conflicting design claims and no confirmed new health measurement.
What is on the calendar
Apple has confirmed a special event at 10 a.m. Pacific on September 9. It has not said which products will appear. MacRumors and 9to5Mac both expect Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 alongside the new iPhones, but those names and that stage time remain expectations until Apple presents them.
The imbalance is striking. Months of reports describe the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable in detail, while the watches are represented by a short Bloomberg summary and a handful of supply-chain claims. Sparse reporting can mean a quiet upgrade; it can also mean that Apple has kept the relevant changes out of sight. It is not evidence by itself.
The reported chip upgrade
Mark Gurman says the two watches are due a long-awaited improvement in chips and speed. Current Series 11 and Ultra 3 models use the S10, and broad performance has changed little since the S9 appeared in 2023. A faster system-in-package could improve responsiveness and extend useful software support even if Apple does not attach a spectacular benchmark to it.
The original draft went too far by presenting a new chip as necessary for Siri AI. Apple’s own compatibility list says otherwise: watchOS 27 brings Siri AI to Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later and SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone nearby. The current S10 watches qualify. A new chip may improve the experience, but Apple has already designed the feature around help from the iPhone.
Two incompatible design stories
DigiTimes has described a major Ultra 4 redesign and as many as twice the sensor components. Gurman expects no substantial exterior redesign before at least next year, while allowing that Apple may revive a ceramic case option. Those reports should not be blended into a confident composite watch. They describe different calendars and may not refer to the same shipping configuration.
Supply-chain evidence can reveal tooling or component orders before it reveals when the finished design will reach stores. A part being prepared in 2026 can belong to a 2027 product. Until photographs, regulatory filings or Apple’s announcement connect those parts to Ultra 4, “major redesign” remains a claim, not a visual description.
More sensors do not equal a new measurement
Doubling sensor components would increase the amount or quality of raw signal; it would not automatically create a new health feature. A useful measurement needs validated algorithms, known error limits, understandable instructions and, where it is a medical function, authorization in each market. The same hardware can therefore expose different features in different countries.
That distinction is especially important for blood pressure. Apple Watch does not take a conventional systolic and diastolic reading. Its existing Hypertension Notification Feature analyzes optical heart-sensor data over multiple days and can warn eligible adults when a pattern suggests possible hypertension. Apple and the FDA both say it is not a replacement for diagnosis, treatment monitoring or a cuff.
The FDA point is already settled
The FDA is not currently “reviewing” the existing Apple hypertension notification, as the draft claimed. The agency received Apple’s K250507 submission in February 2025 and authorized it on September 11, 2025. Apple then made the feature available on Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later with watchOS 26, subject to country availability.
That record does not confirm a new blood-pressure function for Series 12 or Ultra 4. A rumor about more sensors cannot be used to invent a second application or a new clearance. If Apple announces another health metric, its wording, compatible models and geographic availability will matter more than the number of components under the case.
What to check before upgrading
Owners should first check whether their current watch and iPhone already meet the watchOS 27 Siri AI requirements. Apple says the feature begins in English later this year, is initially unavailable on watchOS in the European Union and is unavailable in China while regulatory work continues. Buying new hardware does not remove those regional limits.
The keynote must answer three practical questions: whether the speed gain changes everyday latency, whether any case or band design breaks compatibility, and whether a health feature is available where the buyer lives. Until then, the strongest reason to wait is not a spectacular leak. It is that Apple is nine days away from replacing rumor with a specification sheet.
