MacRumors said it found code references to Lexus in Apple's own Car Key backend, mirroring how Toyota's support was uncovered before it went live on the 2026 RAV4 in February. Toyota had already told Carscoops that the 2026 ES would be the first Lexus to get the enhanced digital key, as part of a new-generation infotainment system; what remains unstated is when the feature reaches customers.
Car Key itself is not new, and its rollout has always been model by model rather than brand by brand. Apple introduced the feature in 2020 with an NFC implementation that shipped first on a BMW, then added support for ultra-wideband, which lets a compatible iPhone stay in a pocket while the car locates it precisely enough to unlock as the owner approaches. Both versions build on the digital key specification maintained by the Car Connectivity Consortium, which is why support arrives one vehicle programme at a time.
Apple Car Key works through NFC โ the same short-range wireless technology used for contactless payments. The credential lives in the phone's secure element, the same isolated hardware that holds payment cards, and the exchange with the vehicle is a local cryptographic handshake rather than a lookup against a server. Express Mode deserves a moment's thought on the same grounds. Skipping authentication is what makes the feature quicker than a fob, and it also means anyone holding the phone can open the car without unlocking it โ a trade most owners will accept once they know they have made it. The corresponding protections, marking the device as lost and revoking the key, are worth learning before they are needed rather than after.
The addition is particularly meaningful for Lexus owners because it addresses a genuine weakness in the brand's current offering. In areas with poor cellular coverage, or simply when the servers are unavailable, the existing system can fail entirely. Underground car parks, steel-framed buildings, and rural roads are exactly the places where a phone has no signal and a driver still needs a door to open. A key that depends on a round trip to a manufacturer's servers inherits every outage and every coverage gap those servers sit behind, and it fails at the least convenient moment by design.
Lexus and Toyota appear to be broadening their Apple Wallet integration across upcoming models. That makes the ES feel like the most visible near-term candidate, even if the full rollout map remains unstated.

More broadly, Apple Car Key has gained significant momentum across the automotive industry. BMW was among the earliest adopters, and the feature is now available on vehicles from Genesis, Kia, Hyundai, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, among others. What once felt like a niche convenience is increasingly becoming a standard expectation among premium buyers.
The details still unstated are the ones that will determine how good the implementation feels in daily use: whether the first Lexus cars rely on NFC alone or add ultra-wideband for hands-free entry, whether shared keys are supported from the outset, and whether the same work reaches Toyota-branded models on a comparable timetable.
