WWDC 2026: Apple Bets Everything on Siri AI, Built With Google Gemini

Apple opened WWDC 2026 with a statement of intent. Standing in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, CEO Tim Cook introduced what the company describes as "the biggest leap forward in Apple software in a decade." At the center of it all: a rebuilt Siri, renamed Siri AI, running on new foundation models co-developed with Google using the technologies behind the Gemini family.

The announcement landed like a bombshell. Apple, for years the champion of on-device processing and privacy-first AI, has partnered with its longtime rival to build the brains of its next-generation assistant. The move reflects the scale of the engineering challenge — building a truly capable conversational AI requires resources that even Apple has chosen not to go alone on.

A Siri rebuilt from the ground up. The new Siri AI is not an upgrade to the old assistant — it is a complete replacement. It can hold natural, multi-turn conversations, understand context across messages, emails, photos, and calendar events stored on device, and interpret what is currently visible on screen. Ask Siri to "reply to the last email from my boss and suggest we push the meeting to Thursday" and it will do exactly that, without the user needing to open the Mail app.

Siri AI now lives in a dedicated app that syncs conversation history across all of a user's devices via iCloud. It integrates with the Dynamic Island on iPhone, appearing as a glowing ring when activated, and surfaces in Spotlight on the Mac. The voice is noticeably more natural, with better handling of interruptions, follow-up questions, and ambiguous phrasing.

The Gemini partnership, explained. Apple was careful to frame the Google collaboration as a foundation, not a handover. The new models were built with the aid of Google Gemini technologies — through distillation and co-training, not by embedding Gemini wholesale into Apple's products. The resulting models run both on-device, via Apple's Neural Engine, and on Apple's own Private Cloud Compute servers, preserving the privacy architecture Apple has built over recent years.

Apple also confirmed that Siri AI will support third-party AI extensions at launch. Users will be able to route specific queries to Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini directly through the Siri interface — selecting their preferred chatbot in Settings under a new "Extensions" menu in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

macOS Golden Gate and 250 changes across the platform. The Mac's new operating system, macOS 27 codenamed Golden Gate, channels the spirit of Mac OS X Snow Leopard: rather than piling on new features, Apple focused on fixing what was already there. AirDrop transfers are faster, network file browsing is more responsive, Messages syncing is more reliable, and Spotlight search returns better results. Apple published a list of more than 250 individual improvements across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 — an unusually detailed public accounting of the kind of work that normally goes unnoticed.

Apple Intelligence, deeper in every app. Visual Intelligence, previously a standalone feature, has been folded into the Camera app with direct Siri integration. Point your iPhone at a dish at a restaurant and Siri will estimate the nutritional content. Photograph a business card and the contact goes straight into your address book. Scan a receipt and Siri can split it for you. These are small moments of friction eliminated at scale — which is exactly the kind of utility Apple needs to demonstrate that AI belongs on the device, not just in the cloud.

Safari gained the ability to organize open tabs, bookmarks, and Reading List entries by topic automatically, create custom extensions from natural language prompts, and monitor specific webpages for changes with a "Notify Me" feature. Write with Siri, a new writing assistant integrated across iOS, can draft text from scratch, correct grammar, and, once it has enough samples, generate content in the user's own writing style.

iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate are currently in developer beta. A public beta is expected in July, with the full release scheduled for the fall alongside the iPhone 17 lineup. Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
